Sage

Character.AI alternative, free to start

Looking for a Character.AI Alternative?

If you came to talk with Socrates or Marcus Aurelius rather than to roleplay, Sage was built for exactly that.

In October 2026 Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 to sell its assets, and says the service keeps running during the sale. Sage is a separate company.

What Character.AI does well

  • An enormous library of characters

Character.AI has characters for almost anything: fiction, games, celebrities, historical figures. Nothing on Sage comes close to that range.

  • Make your own

Anyone can write a character and share it. If creating characters is the point for you, Sage is not a replacement.

  • Roleplay and storytelling

Character.AI is built to keep a scene going. Sage does not do roleplay, fiction or companionship.

What Sage does differently

  • One Socrates, kept in his tradition

Two user-made Socrates characters can sound nothing alike. On Sage there are six mentors, each written and maintained by us, each answering from their own way of seeing.

  • Answers about your actual life

Bring the decision, the loss or the bad week. The mentor answers first and briefly, asks at most one question back, and lets you get on with your day.

  • Read the books with them

Read Meditations with Marcus Aurelius in 30 short readings, or the Bhagavad Gita with Krishna in 24, and talk each one through beside the text.

  • Seven evenings on one decision

A guided path with Socrates for the decision you keep circling: one question an evening, ending in a letter built from your own words.

  • Memory you can see

Each mentor remembers what matters across conversations. You can read, edit or delete every memory, or keep a conversation out of memory entirely.

Which is better for what

The light falls on whichever is better for each job. Where both do it well, both are lit.

It has also said it could shut down if no buyer keeps it running. Sage is a separate company and is not affiliated with Character.AI.
